On September 19, 2024, Honjo Ai, a well-known AV actress, was reported to be involved in a romantic and physical relationship with married streamer Kato Junichi. Despite the controversy, Kato Junichi has continued his live streaming activities, while Honjo Ai announced today that she will be taking an “indefinite break” and issued another apology to her fans.
On the X platform (formerly known as Twitter), Honjo Ai expressed her apology to her fans and announced the suspension of all her activities. She wrote, “This incident has caused concern and trouble for the people involved. I deeply apologize and will engage in self-reflection.” However, she did not specify the length of her break. Many of her fans expressed sadness over the announcement and voiced their support for her, with some arguing that Kato Junichi is the real issue and pointing out the unfair treatment she is receiving.
AV critic Ichiken Wanchunqiu (Sword of Spring and Autumn) wrote on his blog that while Honjo Ai is a victim in this situation, AV actresses in Japan still face considerable discrimination. Many question her integrity, accusing her of seducing others. Her agency also stated that there is no timeline for her return and that during this period, there will be no updates on her social media, live streams, or new films. Wanchunqiu lamented that fans should prepare themselves for a long period without seeing Honjo Ai.
As for Kato Junichi, he recently admitted during a live stream that he had lied to Honjo Ai, telling her that he was divorced because he “wanted to be intimate.” He also mentioned that his wife has forgiven him for the incident, saying, “That’s just the kind of person you are, and I won’t get mad,” indicating that their marriage remains intact.
