When it comes to Nobita’s performance at school in “Doraemon,” it’s hard to argue that it’s astonishing; almost no one would disagree. His exam scores often end up being zero, and being late is a common occurrence, making him a frequent target for detention in the hallway. However, recently, Japanese netizens have been discussing not his grades or tardiness, but rather the seemingly unrelated phenomena that appear to have a common cause—Nobita’s home is too far from the school!
So, how much of an impact does the distance between home and school have on learning attitudes? Let’s take a look at the in-depth analysis from Japanese netizens!
Nobita often gets called to stand in the hallway for being late to school, which has become a part of his life.
Recently, a Japanese netizen with the username “Onigiri” shared his views on the reasons for Nobita’s frequent tardiness on social media, sparking heated discussions among many netizens..
This might be one reason why Nobita is late for school.
‘Onigiri’ shared a city design illustration from the ‘Doraemon’ television animation and several movie versions, drawn by the experienced director Shizuyama Tsutomu.
From this map, it is clear that Nobita’s house is located in the bottom right corner, while the school is in the top left corner, roughly five blocks apart. Other main characters’ homes are all closer to the school than Nobita’s, and many netizens finally understand the reason why Nobita is always late.
In addition, some netizens discovered a more interesting phenomenon: The top students such as Shizuka and Takeshi live closer to the school, while the slightly weaker students like Gian and Suneo live a bit farther away. Nobita is the one who lives the farthest.
This may indicate that after saving time between classes, there is more time to invest in study or rest!
Meanwhile, netizens also noticed that the open space where the protagonists often gather is very close to Nobita’s house. Even so, other characters are still willing to come from a distance to accompany Nobita. Does this suggest that they are very considerate of him?
The reactions from netizens include:
- Although it’s a bit far… (laughs)
- With the added tendency to stay in bed and this distance, being late is unavoidable.
- This might also be one of the reasons for Mukusen’s good grades.
- For elementary school students, this distance is really not easy.
- The school’s location is really quite far, and the back mountain isn’t directly behind either; there’s quite a distance to cover (laughs).
- The walking distance is approximately 1,200 to 1,500 meters, which is indeed not short for elementary school students.
- From the Nobi house to the school gate, the shortest route might pass through 30 houses (most of which are detached houses with yards), and it probably requires a walk of about 800 to 1,000 meters? Even though it’s far, it still feels within the school district.
- Although it may not necessarily reach 1 kilometer, it takes about 15 minutes for elementary school students to walk. It’s not too far, but not close either. For someone like Nobita, who loves to snooze, it would be better to live closer to the school. By the way, it turns out that this is what the city’s map looks like in the show.
- Based on this distance, I think Nobita can be considered as crossing school district lines. It is clear that Nobita’s parents are putting a lot of effort into his education by choosing to send him to a good elementary school where Takeshi and Shizuka study. As for the distance issue, let’s leave that to Doraemon to solve.
- Everyone always cooperates with Nobita to choose to play in the open space near his house, it’s really thoughtful (laugh).
- Shizuka and Gian will first pass by the open space and then invite Nobita to go out together, which is really heartwarming.
- Compared to the initial setting, the time and space have changed a lot. (Although this map is not completely consistent with the depiction in the story)
Is your home further away from the elementary school you attend than Nobita’s? Do you feel that your grades are affected because of this?
