Hirofumi Arai, a Korean-Japanese actor known for his roles in “Gintama” and “100 Yen Love,” has been released on parole this July after serving four years for sexually assaulting a massage therapist. Shortly after his release, Arai attended a concert by the rock band Dragon Ash, showing support for his old friend and the band’s lead singer, Kj.
Physical and Professional Changes
Reports indicate that prison life has significantly changed Arai, with noticeable pale skin and a much leaner physique compared to his former robust appearance.
When asked about returning to the entertainment industry, Arai cautiously remarked, “Let’s talk about it after my sentence is over.”
Background of the Assault Case
The assault incident that led to Arai’s conviction occurred in 2018. He was accused by a female massage therapist of forcefully grabbing her, pulling down her trousers, and coercing her into sexual acts.
This case drew widespread attention and led to his agency terminating his contract. Ongoing projects were also affected as his scenes were either recast or deleted.
During the trial, Arai claimed that the sexual acts were consensual, but he was eventually sentenced to five years in prison. The sentence was reduced to four years after he agreed to a settlement of 3 million Yen with the victim.
Speculation on Arai’s Future
Arai’s appearance at the concert and his vague comment about his future have ignited discussions on social media about the possibility of his return to acting. However, his controversial past and the serious nature of his conviction may pose significant challenges if he intends to revive his career in the public eye.
