Recently, an 80-year-old grandmother from a rural village in Zambia has stirred up a sensation on social media. Contrary to the traditional image of a young fashionista, this grandmother, with her bold and vibrant outfit choices, has been affectionately referred to as “Legendary Fashion Granny” by netizens. Her name is Margret Chola, and she bravely breaks the stereotypes of fashion for the elderly, becoming the focus of everyone’s attention.

Chola Grandma’s fashion style is unique, with large pearl necklaces paired with eye-catching sunglasses, along with vibrant red and bright green streetwear; every outfit is striking and exudes confidence. A person’s clothing not only reflects their inner world but can also change our self-perception. Chola Grandma stated: “After wearing these clothes, I feel different, as if I have become a queen ready to conquer the world!”
Behind her dazzling style is her granddaughter Diana Kaumba. Diana is a stylist who has been working hard in the fashion industry since 2012. This fashion adventure began during a trip back home. On a visit from New York to see her grandmother, Diana had the sudden idea to let her grandmother try on some of her clothes and captured precious moments on camera.
Diana recalled: “That trip home was on the anniversary of my father’s passing, he was my initial inspiration for fashion, always dressed to the nines. At the time, I brought some clothes I hadn’t worn yet, and I suggested having my grandmother try them on, to my surprise, she gladly accepted.”
I didn’t expect this proposal to become the starting point of a fashion adventure for grandparents and grandchildren.
Diana uploaded her grandmother’s photo online, instantly receiving over 1,000 likes. After that, Diana began the “Grandmother Series” plan, experimenting with various styles. These photos not only showcase modern fashion but also incorporate local African culture and her grandmother’s personality. One project named “The Greatest of All Time” (GOAT) features her grandmother posing with a goat wearing a pearl necklace, both stylish and down-to-earth, unique and full of character.
The arduous past and the rebirth of the future
Grandma Chola’s life story not only lets us feel her shiny appearance, but also her resilience and rebirth after enduring hardships.
When she was young, she dropped out of school at the age of 12 or 13 due to her family’s poverty and was forced to marry a man in his thirties. In her unbearable marriage, she gave birth to three children and lived an unhappy life, even resorting to alcoholism due to the pressure. Grandma Chola admitted: “At that time, I had no way out and could only endure that painful marriage.” Although she eventually bravely left her marriage, the regrets, wounds, and pains of the past still lie deep in her heart.
However, the success of the “Grandma Series” brought a new atmosphere to Grandma Chola’s life. She said that these designs give her the motivation to wake up each day because she knows that people all over the world are paying attention to her. The feeling of being loved and appreciated reignites her passion for life. Her granddaughter Diana also noticed: “Whenever grandma stands in front of these outfits, her eyes shine brightly, and I know she still possesses a youthful spirit.”
With the success of this series, more and more people are reaching out to Diana, hoping to create looks for their grandmothers. These grandmothers range in age from 70 to 96 years old. Diana said: “I have received requests from four granddaughters, who hope I can help their grandmothers showcase a charm that transcends age.” This is not only a sharing of fashion but also a manifestation of intergenerational love.
Grandma Chola bluntly stated, “Don’t feel ashamed of your age, and don’t let society’s comments limit you.”
During a visit to the BBC, granddaughter Diana exclaimed: “Don’t exclude the elderly; treat them as you would treat young people, because everyone has the right to be loved.”
The story of Grandma Chola reminds us that regardless of age, there are endless possibilities.
